Douglas Powell

Obituary of Douglas Owen Powell

Douglas Owen Powell was born on April 17, 1973 to Debbie Kobilan and Stephen Powell in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he also spent the remainder of his life. Doug graduated from Wasson High School in 1991 and went on to purchase the Water Company from his stepfather, Darrel Kobilan. Doug proudly served the community through his business but more importantly, through the friendships that he often gained via business transactions.

Doug was a dedicated, loving (and at times, comedic) husband to his beautiful wife, Kim, who he “reeled in with a very convincing story of breaking his arm during his profession as a bull rider” but, as the story is told, it wasn’t until later in their relationship that she was informed that the bull was actually mechanical. Together, Doug and Kim raised their only child, Dillon. It was apparent to everyone that Dillon was Doug’s best friend from the very start; you could always find Doug proudly cheering Dillon on during “Friday Night Lights” at any of the Widefield High School football games!

Doug was an avid fan of the Vikings football team, Avalanche Hockey team, and the Rockies baseball team. Doug enjoyed spending time with his family, watching NASCAR (and betting against Dillon- which, by the way, Doug won again this week), attending Motocross races, golfing with his long-time and cherished friend, Chuck Whitcomb, as well as being the most loving Pop-pop to his three grandchildren, Greyson, Jackson, and Emery.

Doug loved entertaining and hearing people laugh. It was not uncommon for Doug and Kim to host a summer BBQ attended by a crowd of friends and family alike (Doug knew NO stranger), and you could be sure to find Doug in cut-off jean shorts, no shirt, and an ice cold Coors Light (but only if the mountains were blue “’cause that’s how you know it’s cold” as he insisted) and cracking jokes into the late night hours!

Doug left an undeniable and irreplaceable impression on everyone who was blessed to know him. His passing on July 16, 2023 has left so many with broken hearts and cherished memories.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Kim Powell; parents, Debbie (Darrel) Kobilan, and Stephen Powell; aunt, Chris Knox; son, Dillon (Cathryne Green) Powell; three grandchildren, Greyson, Jackson, and Emery; sister, Stephanie (Chuck Parkison) Powell; (step) brother DJ (Mandy) Kobilan; (step) sister, Laura Kobilan; as well as several nieces and nephews.
