Obituary of Victoria Clara Peters

Victoria Clara Peters, resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on February 11th, in the year of Our Lord, 2017 at the age of 64. Vicki (as she liked to be called) was born in Lynwood, California, in 1952. Her parents divorced when she was only four years old. Since her mother had to have a job to support them, Vicki did much of the work taking care of the house and helping to raise her two younger brothers, Dave and Mike. During high school, she worked as a waitress for the Holland House. An employee there kept hinting that Vicki should meet her son, Rick. Their first date was a double date with some friends at a bowling alley. After the date, she knew she was going to marry him. Rick and Vicki married in 1970 after she graduated from high school. She attended college at UCLA for one year before starting work at a small bank. After a few years, they bought a house in Pico Rivera, California and started a family. Having kids compelled Vicki to start seriously thinking about God and her Catholic faith, from which she had fallen away over the years. Over the next few decades, her knowledge and love of God became deeper and deeper, until it became the most important thing in her life. In 1986, Vicki and her kids prayed a nine month novena for Rick's conversion. At the end of the nine months, Rick entered the Catholic Church. More than anything, Vicki had a desire to save souls. She prayed every day that seven generations of her family would never lose the Catholic faith. To this day, all seven of her children and nine grandchildren have remained strong in their Catholic faith. She was instrumental in the conversion of many other people, and was also a member of the Third Order of St. Norbert. Vicki had many passions. One of them was reading books. Her house was like a library! But probably her greatest passion was devoting her time to serving others. She did this in many ways. In the 70's she became involved in La Leche League, and eventually went on to become a leader in the organization. She opened up her home to new mothers in order to provide breast feeding consultation and support. Vicki was also involved in the Latin Mass community and served as the vice president of Una Voce, Los Angeles Chapter. But her biggest contribution was to the homeschool movement. She was basically a pioneer in the movement and was homeschooling back when homeschooling families were a rare breed. Not only did she homeschool her own seven children, but she devoted her life to advancing the cause of homeschooling. It has been said that there wasn't a homeschooling family in California who didn't know of Vicki Peters. She helped organize and also spoke at homeschooling conferences. She also did consultant work and helped homeschooling families all across the country. Throughout her life, Vicki always stressed to her children the importance of family. The closeness of her seven children as adults is a great testimony to this. In 2010, the Peters family decided to leave California. A plan was made to eventually relocate the entire family to Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 2012, Vicki's eldest son, Jonathan, and his family were the first to make the move. By 2015, the entire Peters family had made the move and was joyfully reunited in the Springs. The hand of Divine Providence was watching over the family and making sure they would all be together for Vicki's passing. In 2016, Rick and Vicki celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. During that year, Vicki's health had been declining. She had many complications due to diabetes (including blindness), a broken hip from a fall, and severe memory loss due to mini-strokes. On November 18, 2016, Vicki had a major stroke. Once again the hand of Divine Providence could be seen. God allowed her to be conscious long enough to receive the Last Rites from a Catholic priest (which is another thing she always prayed for). Over the next few months, the stroke slowly took its toll as she began losing more and more functions and her organs started shutting down. On February 11, 2017, she took her final breath. She always said that she didn't want to live a long life, but that it was her greatest desire to be with God in eternity. Vicki truly touched thousands of lives during her time on this earth through her example as a virtuous, God-fearing woman, and by her untiring devotion to serving others. She is survived by her husband, Rick Peters; five sons, Jonathan (Jennifer) Peters, Elliot (Allison) Peters, Aaron Peters, Andrew (Lisa) Peters, and Ian Peters; two daughters, Claire Peters, and Rachel Peters; and her nine grandchildren.
