Obituary of Muriel Irene Jensen

Muriel I. Jensen died June 24, 2017 in Colorado Springs. Muriel was born to Elenor (Helgeson) and Walter Sherman on June 17, 1933 in Miles City, Montana. She grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota and graduated from Bismarck High School, where she was active in Girls State and editor of the student newspaper. The governor was in attendance at her senior piano recital. On July 3, 1954, she married Alfred D. Jensen, a Korean War veteran and pharmacist, and they made their home in Saint Paul, Minnesota. In 1955, she graduated from Hamline University, where she majored in English and minored in theatre. Everywhere she went, Muriel was known for her capacity to love and encourage people in whatever way she found opportunity. Muriel was a gifted teacher and leader, serving in many capacities in her church and community. She particularly enjoyed teaching Bible studies and leading prayer groups. In addition, she had a variety of occupations, including secondary English teacher at Faith Academy, co-owner and manager of L'Trianon gift shop, evangelism coordinator at North Heights Lutheran Church, and character formation director at Master's Institute, from which she received an honorary degree. She was also the author of Born to be a Winner, an inspirational chronicle of her father's life.She enjoyed writing memoirs, playing bridge, golfing, and traveling, and was a skillful Wii bowler. She is survived by her children Margaret (Michael) Hanratty, Roger (Linda) Jensen, Judith (John) Peterson, and Daniel (Jennifer) Jensen; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sister, Linda; and brother-in-law, Donald Jensen.
