Obituary of Lt Col Joseph Clarence Powell,, USAF, Jr.

Joseph Clarence Powell, Jr., 87, died peacefully in his favorite chair at his Colorado Springs home July 17, 2019.Joe was born March 31, 1932, in a Kenvir, Kentucky, coal camp, in Harlan County, the firstborn child of Clarence and Edith Powell. He grew up in the Walkertown section of Hazard, Kentucky, graduated from Hazard High School and earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky. In 1955, Joe married Anna Sue McIntyre and then entered the U.S. Air Force. Joe spent the bulk of his Air Force career as a pilot and was part of the VIP pool at Peterson Air Force Base. He served in Southeast Asia in 1971-72, where he flew CH-53 Helicopters. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in summer 1975.Joe was a lifelong fan of University of Kentucky basketball. He and Sue were part-time residents of Yuma, Arizona.He was preceded in death by his oldest son, David.In addition to Sue, survivors include his children, Pam (Dan), Todd (Lisa) and Sandy; his grandchildren, Josh, Nicki, Brandon, Andrew, Ruth, Anna, Clare and Selah; and his sister, Diane and her family.
