Gwen Marie Listul was born in Mount Pleasant, Michigan on August 18, 1958 to Elton and Jeanne (Breidenstein) Torpey. She was raised in the little town of Elwell, Michigan. Her parents divorced when she was about 14 years old. She graduated from high school in Elwell and attended Central Michigan University and Delta College. In 1980, her zest for a life style change and the love of John Denver's music took her and her friend, Dawn, to Rocky Mountain National Park where they each had a summer job. They returned to Michigan, but the next day they decided to head back out to Colorado. After working at Vail Ski Resort, her travels took her to Dallas, Texas where she began working in the hotel industry. Yet another change in her plans got her a job with The City of Colorado Springs. With this job, she met a guy named Warren. It took him three years to work up the courage to ask her hand in marriage. Warren and Gwen were wed on June 29, 1996. In this union, they were blessed with a daughter and a son. Wanting to only work part-time because of the children, she quit her full-time job with the city. Her other employers were the United States Postal Service in Calhan and Simla, Colorado. At the time of her death, Gwen was working for Elbert County Government in the Human Resources Department.Gwen lost her 27 month long battle with cancer on July 18, 2019.
