My cherished memory of mom was when I decided to enlist in the Army. After getting both mom and dad's permission, I signed my contract and began conditioning myself. They told me military life was challenging and I would reap the benefits through resiliency and the determination to succeed. Needless to say I shipped to basic training and the second week there, I was desperately homesick and wanted to go home. We were given a chance to use the pay phone to call home. When it was my turn, I called and mom picked up. The minute I heard her voice, I began crying and stared I wanted to go home. She laughed in my face and said I couldn't because it was my choice to go. That laughter was all it took to steel myself to serve for 22 years. Mom always new what to do and say in every situation. I miss you dearly and love you mom. I know you are in a better place with dad holding his hand and laughing at my story. Thank you for this life of mine. There would be no me without either of you. You both are forever loved and etched in the world around us. Your loving daughter, Savath Kilburn
