Obituary of Jacob Charles Calhoun

Jacob Charles Calhoun became the love and joy of his parents, Jason and Lisa Calhoun, on September 1, 1995 in Portland, Oregon. He came into this world on his own terms. His parents had to have him delivered at the NICU in Portland, because he had a knot in his umbilical cord, and had wrapped it around his neck. This world was almost deprived of the 24 years it got with Jacob at that moment. He was an extremely happy joyful soul from a very early age. Jacob was joined a few years later by his brothers, Patrick and Gabe Calhoun, whom he welcomed into his arms immediately and began to look over and protect. He also loved to taunt and tease them, as is the way of brothers.Jacob loved spending time with his late grandparents, Don and Jane Zuber, and continued to enjoy spending time with his Nana and Papa, Charles and Caroline Calhoun, up into the last week of his life as they had lived the past several years here in Colorado near him. Jacob had several aunts, uncles, and cousins whom he also loved very much. Such was the way of Jacob's all-too brief life. It was marked and underscored by love. Love of life. Love of sports. Love of friends and coworkers. Love of family. And love of God. Love, joy, and happiness marked every aspect of his life. From his earliest days, Jacob attracted people to him like moths to a flame. His friend groups were always large, his friendships deeply held, and his friends sincerely loved. Jacob began his school days at San Carlos Catholic School in Monterey, California where he spent two years of his life enjoying the Monterey Bay and all the sea life it provided. This time solidified his love of the ocean and beaches, and for a while he wanted to be a marine biologist when he grew up. Just prior to his first-grade year, the family moved to Colorado Springs and Jacob began his eight years at Divine Redeemer Catholic School. Jacob's abiding love of sports began at a very young age. He began playing baseball and football. At the age of 8, he found soccer, and his passion was ignited. Jacob began playing competitively with Rush Soccer at age 9. He had so many amazing coaches that helped to shape and form him as an athlete, and who had a hand in molding him into the fine man he would become; but Mike Archuleta, Lee Slater, Paul Davison, and Nik Penn stand out from his Rush days. Jacob played high school soccer at St. Mary's Catholic High School for his coaches, who would later become dear friends, Lou Sagastume and Rob Mery. Rob and Lou had a profound impact on Jacob, and instilled in him a deeper love of God, and a competitive drive that would push him in all aspects of his life; sports, work, relationshipseverything. He jumped right in as a freshman, filling the roles of starting goalkeeper, team motivator, and the one to make sure everyone laughed. He proved an impenetrable presence in the goal, and in his sophomore year, the team worked hard to achieve the program's first boys' soccer state championship. During the state championship game, Jacob earned his reputation as a clutch player, as he went on to have seventeen saves, including a penalty kick to preserve the lead and allow the Pirates to prevail. He was recognized as the MVP of the match for his efforts in the net. Jacob went on to achieve his goal of getting a full scholarship to play college soccer at Colorado Christian University. After a year there, he decided his soccer days were over after receiving a shoulder surgery. He left CCU and came back to the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business. While at UCCS, Jacob was a Founding Father of the Eta Xi chapter of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Here he made several lifelong brothers and made a lasting impact on the very culture of the University and the Chapter. Following graduation, Jacob went to work at Spencer Ogden in Denver as a recruiter in the oil and gas industry. His open, engaging, and lively personality helped him to see great success, and was promoted to a business development role. In true Jacob fashion, he impacted every person in the office as well as his clients in a positive and lasting manner. Although Jacob's life was cut short at the tragically early age of 24, he lived a full and rich life. Jacob touched the lives of countless friends, acquaintances, and coworkers. He loved the beach. He loved the lake. He loved the mountains. He loved the sports arenas, concert venues, and clubs. But mostly, he loved people and loved to share time with his friends and family, wherever that might be. Jacob was always there for those in need and would literally give the shirt off his back to someone in need. One of Jacob's favorite songs since he was a little boy and right through into adulthood was "Life is a Highway" and that sentiment captures Jacob's all-too brief ride through this life; spreading love and laughter, establishing enduring friendships, making lasting memories, loving God and appreciating His creation, and enjoying the ride. Jacob Calhoun touched this earth and those fortunate enough to have known him for an albeit too-brief a time. But while he was here, he changed the world, and everyone who he touched. Our hearts are broken, and his personality will likely not be seen again. But do not mourn his loss, for we were fortunate to have him. Instead, celebrate his life at every gathering; raise a glass to his memory. Think of him as only having gone ahead to prepare things for us. For we will see him againRest in peace our beloved Jacob! A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held, 10:00AM, Saturday, May 9, 2020. The mass will be streamed live.
