Obituary of Mary Carter O'Connor

Mary Carter O'Connor, daughter of LTG Marshall and Preot Carter, passed away July 20, 2020 at home with her husband, Michael O'Connor, and children, Erik and Kitren Nickerson, at her side.Mary, a Stanford graduate, was a lifetime competitive equestrian and a true horsewoman. She was a teacher and coach, served as Director of Admissions at Fountain Valley School, Director of Marketing for Admissions at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Director Denver Office of the College Board. She also opened a private consulting practice to help students and their parents navigate the college admissions process.Mary was the first female president of the Broadmoor Rotary Club, served on dozens of regional and national boards and associations, co-founded and served as president of the Higher Education Consultant Association, and served on the National Admissions Practices (Ethics) Committee.She was known for her intellect, keen wit and sense of humor, mentorship, and love of her sport. She will always be remembered for her generous heart and loving strength that she shared with anyone she met. Her loss is immeasurable but her family feels blessed to have received her endless love and strength. She was the most supportive mother, wife, daughter, aunt, and friend that anyone could ask for.Mary is survived by her husband, Michael O'Connor of Colorado Springs; son, Erik Nickerson of Boulder, Colorado; daughter, Kitren Nickerson of Lakewood, Colorado; grandsons, Gus and Cosmo Nickerson of Boulder, Colorado; brother, Marsh Carter of Cambridge, Massachusetts; niece, Preot Oaks of Bountiful, Utah; nephew, Marshall Carter of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and niece, Christina Mann of Cambridge, Massachusetts.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary's memory may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org).
