Obituary of Col Charles James Doryland, USAF,

Charles James Doryland, 89, of Littleton, Colorado passed away September 10, 2020 in Littleton, Colorado.He was born September 29, 1930 to Charles and Helen Doryland in Kansas City, Missouri.Charles was an Eagle Scout and attended Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Kansas graduating in 1948. He went on to earn the following degrees: Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California, and a Doctor of Business Administration from Harvard University.Charles served in the United States Air Force as a fighter pilot and test pilot for twenty-two years and retired as a Colonel. He earned the Legion of Merit, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, Bronze Star, sixteen Air Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation.After retiring from the Air Force, he taught Accounting and Information Systems at both the University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas and Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina. Charles served several years with Benny Hinn Ministries as head usher for crusades in both the United States and overseas. He was a lion of a man with a servant's heart. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends and family. A wonderful husband, father, hero to his family, and a mentor to those close to him and called him friend.He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles James Thomas Doryland and Helen Louise Whitaker Doryland; his wife, Mary Louise Shelton Shannon Doryland; his brothers, Thomas Doryland, Ernest Darcy Doryland and Richard Arthur Doryland; his sister, Julia Whitaker Doryland O'Connor; and his grandson, Jon Philip Chaney.Charles is survived by his sons, Michael Lee Shannon of Omaha, Nebraska, Lee Taylor Shannon of Lakewood, Colorado, John Behring Doryland of Sacramento, California, and David James Doryland of Colorado Springs, Colorado; daughters, Terry Ann Doryland Chaney of San Diego, California, and Amanda Elizabeth Doryland of Lakewood, Colorado; grandsons, Christopher Michael Shannon of Omaha, Nebraska, Jeffrey Lee Shannon of Crown Point, Indiana, Jesse Taylor Shannon of Lakewood, Colorado, Zachary Taylor Shannon of Lakewood, Colorado, Matthew James Doryland of Centennial, Colorado, Andrew David Doryland of Okinawa, Japan, Michael Ernest Doryland of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Daniel Thomas Doryland of Colorado Springs, Colorado; granddaughter, Amber Doryland of Plattsburg, New York; great-grandson, Luca James Doryland; great-granddaughters, Molly Diane Doryland, Audrey Rose Doryland, and Beatrice Litza Viviene Doryland; nephew, Robert O'Connor; nieces, Ellen Doryland Cannoy, Karen Doryland Terhune, Monique Doryland and Susan O'Connor McCarty.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Charles' memory may be made to the Christian Broadcasting Network of Virginia Beach, Virginia, https://www1.cbn.com/ or the Denver Rescue Mission of Denver, Colorado, https://denverrescuemission.org/The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Matthew Gardner of The Law Office of Matthew Gardner, and John Nicholas of Trustee Services Group.A private Funeral Service will be held 3:00PM, Monday September 21, 2020.
