Obituary
Obituary of Lt Col John Douglas Parr, U.S. Air Force,
John Douglas Parr, 82, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2022, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was surrounded by his loving family at his passing.
John was born April 26, 1940, to James Edward and Hazel Ross Parr in Lexington, Tennessee. Much of his childhood was spent moving to various places around the world while his father served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army. He spoke fondly of his time spent in Texas, Italy, and Austria. He graduated from Fort Knox High School in Kentucky, where he was a star basketball center and the valedictorian for his graduating class.
John attended the Ohio State University on a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship and earned a bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He met Shirley Louise Fryer during his senior year, and they were married by his father on December 28, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio. Following graduation, John began his career as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and began raising a family. He and Shirley were blessed with six children. He was stationed in several places around the country and was especially proud of his service in Vietnam. While in Vietnam, John was taught and baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, John and Shirley created a life full of love, laughter, and countless adventures.
John is survived by his children, William (Lori) Parr, Heather (Timothy) Sheehan, Douglas (Christy) Parr, Catherine Parr, Shannon (Stephen) Foote, Janet (Trenton) Schlosser; eighteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; parents, James and Hazel Parr; and his brother, Thomas Parr.
John loved his family thoroughly, and as it grew, he enjoyed happy moments and gatherings of celebration and life. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel and continued his career supporting the Air Force Satellite Control Network. Throughout his life, John was a perpetual student, earning three master's degrees in Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Computer Science. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and found joy in Christ-like service as often as he could. He will always be remembered for his dedicated service, intelligence, and devoted love and support for his family.
