Estelle McGarvey

Obituary of Estelle Woodard McGarvey

Estelle McGarvey, 87, beloved wife of William, the love of her life for over 65 years, passed away on February 8, 2024. Estelle’s world revolved around her faith, husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Estelle was a follower of Jesus. Estelle’s faith was the foundation of her life. Estelle loved to attend church and sing gospel hymns.

Dedicated and loving mother to Lisa, Scott (Winnie), Timothy (Julie), and Steve (Noelle). Proud Grandmother of David, Jeremiah, Samantha, Nathaniel, Jessica, Tayler, Danielle, Steve, and Matt. Great-grandfather to many, including Logan, Connor, and Jaxon.

Estelle is preceded in death by her husband William; her parents Ross and Necie; and her brother Paul. Estelle loved to share stories about growing up in the South. The daughter of a farmer (who was a finishing carpenter by trade), Estelle could share for hours about her childhood adventures. Be it a story about riding pigs with her brother, being sent outside to catch the chickens to wash their feet, eating too much food at her Aunt Callie’s house, or grandmas who chewed and spat, Estelle loved to reminisce.

Estelle loved almost all vegetables but didn’t care for okra at all! Estelle would be happiest with a plate full of fresh vegetables and no meat. Estelle loved to play card and board games. A vicious Gin Rummy player, Estelle would laugh with glee when she unloaded a handful of cards in a single swoop. Later in life, Estelle developed a passion for the card game “Cheat” and would tilt her head to the left, grin, and bat her eyelashes while engaging in card combat.

Estelle lived to spend time with her family. She was happiest when she could cook, garden, play games, or work a puzzle with her grandchildren or children.

In her final years, Estelle developed vascular dementia, and her memory and capabilities began to fade. However, she remained firm in her faith in Jesus and her undying love of Bill. Estelle and Bill often sang “You Are My Sunshine” to each other, both in good times and bad. Estelle’s children and grandchildren sang the song to her and together with her when Bill could no longer do so.

Family surrounded Estelle with love, singing, and stories during her last days.

Estelle leaves behind children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who adored her. Our lives will be less attractive and colorful without her presence.
