Mary Maez

Obituary of Mary Ann Maez

Mary Ann was born deaf in Las Animas, Colorado. As she was growing up in La Junta, Colorado, someone discovered that she was deaf, and invited her to attend the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind. From there her life blossomed. She gained many friends and ultimately met her future husband Juan Maez.

As a young woman she enjoyed socializing with her friends and dancing; particularly the jitterbug. As she got older she joined various deaf clubs; got married, and raised a family. She enjoyed watching different types of sports. She loved, however, watching the Denver Broncos play. She also enjoyed cooking, whether it was for a crowd or her family. Tortillas were made on a regular basis, tamales were made every year, and she made a mean red chili.

Having being born deaf in 1932 was definitely a challenge within itself. It did not stop her from overcoming many challenges that went along with that. She worked hard every day to overcome those challenges; whether it was in the work place or at home. Mary Ann was ultimately a happy person. She was always smiling, had a silly laugh, and had a bit of sass that made her who she was.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Juan Maez.

She was survived by her Children, Tom Maez, Rita Maez, and Jeanine Martinez (Danny); as well as her grandchildren, Sophia Maez, Tommy Maez, Carmella Maez, Kendra Monaghan (Josh), Jasmine Keebler, Christina Martinez, Vincent Martinez; and great-grandchildren, Louie Jr. Ornelas, Zion Ornelas, Lydia Monaghan, and Francis Monaghan.
