Obituary of William J. McGarvey
William "Bill' J. McGarvey, 89, beloved husband of Estelle, the love of his life for over 65 years, passed away on January 1, 2024.
Bill was a follower of Jesus. Bill had a hard-core love of pepperoni pizza, Hershey's Kisses, ice cream, and popcorn (preferably all on the same day!)
Dedicated and loving father to Lisa, Scott (Winnie), Timothy (Julie), and Steve (Noelle). Proud Grandfather of David, Jeremiah, Samantha, Nathaniel, Jessica, Tayler, Danielle, Steve, and Matt. Great-grandfather to many, including Logan, Connor, and Jaxon.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, James and Jessie McGarvey; his sisters Anges (Nessie) and Mary (Maisie); and his twin brother James (Jim.)
Born in Detroit, Bill met and married Estelle Woodard in 1958. Bill and Estelle’s parents lived next door to each other. Bill was introduced to Estelle when he returned from serving in the Navy during the Korean War.
Bill was a proud U.S. Navy veteran and electrical engineer who served at many distinguished organizations, including Ford Motor Company, NASA, NCR, AT&T’s Bell Labs, and Calvary Temple.
His work led the family to Texas, Ohio, Colorado Springs, Pennsylvania, and Puyallup, Washington. Bill’s work often required international travel, which he enjoyed. He retired from his favorite job, serving as Business Manager for the former Calvary Temple in Auburn, WA, an Assemblies of God Church, where he was a long-time member.
In addition to time spent with God, his wife, and family, Bill enjoyed tinkering with home projects. He loved taking road trips with a good cup of coffee and watching movies, preferably with popcorn and chocolate. His famous Christmas fudge is legendary among family and friends. His grandchildren looked forward to annual “certifications” in candy-making tasks as they grew into the chocolate tradition.
Bill maintained his dry wit until the very end. Informed of his impending passing, Bill said that only one thing was missing from the conversation: pepperoni pizza. Bill’s last major meal was his favorite meal. Bill was surrounded by laughter, love, and family during his final days.
