Debbie’s Life

Debra Lynn Seibert passed away quietly October 10, 2023 in a hospital room with her husband Michael and her oldest friend Kathy at her side.
  
On May 4, 1951 Debra Lynn Weinbrenner was born in Wichita, KS. Growing up in SW Wichita with her brother Steven, she attended South High, graduating in 1969. Her future husband had also graduated from South in 1965 and lived less than a mile away. They met at Wichita State University where Debbie earned her BA in education in 1975. 

September 1977, Debbie and Mike married at the Bartlette Arboretum in Belle Plain KS. An amazing European honeymoon, generously gifted by the groom’s best man/brother Patrick was highlighted by, a Vatican tour with a retired Navy chaplain, two nights at Octoberfest in Munich, where her fluency in German was handy, and an afternoon church service at Westminster Abbey.

Throughout the eighties, Debbie taught typing and computer science at Kapaun Mt. Carmel high school. While she appreciated all her students, the “jocks” were always her favorites, especially the wrestlers. She loved scorekeeping at wrestling meets. Recalling times with faculty friends and students always brought her joyful memories.

Returning to graduate studies, she earned her Master of Science degree (summa cum laude) from Kansas State in 1994. Her most rewarding teaching experience came next at an alternative school in Derby. The Colorado chapter of their lives began 25 years ago with a move to Colorado Springs. Retiring early, Debbie took time developing her many interests and talents. A longtime associate of Longaberger, she continued collecting baskets (hundreds decorate our home) and pottery. A passion for gardening came from her grandfather which led her to found the Front Range Herb Society. The group planted and maintained herb gardens for several years at the historic McAllister House. Her grandmother taught her canning as a teenager. Debbie’s talent earned many blue ribbons at both county and state fairs. Through CSU she became accredited as Master Food Safety Advisor and helped many novice canners. Cooking was a lifelong pursuit and she loved every facet of it., collecting: century old cast iron pots; copper pans; LeCreuset; china and crystal; and cookbooks galore from chefs famous and unknown. Her favorite cuisines to prepare were Cajun, Indian, and New Mexican since they used so many spices. Trips to Santa Fe for bushels of Hatch chiles were a fall tradition.

Always fascinated by genealogy, Debbie traced her lineage to the Revolution. With a confirmed patriot, she was accepted into the DAR, Kinnikinnik chapter, where she proudly served on the board, most recently as second vice regent. Always extroverted, Debbie made friends easily, becoming closest with a wonderful group of women, her “mermaids”, water aerobics companions for many years.

Her second favorite role was Aunt Debbie to her nieces Jordan and Jessica; nephew Matthew; and their beautiful children.

Debra was preceded in death by mother Evelyn Marie; father Floyd Dean; brother Steven; grandparents, Otto and Lottie Weinbrenner, Rollie and Gladys Lewis; and her beloved dobermans, Callie Jane and Max.

She is survived by her spouse, Michael.
