It was very sad to hear about Steve’s passing. I was fortunate to teach with Steve for many years at Sierra High School where he was beloved and respected by his students. I was lucky to have traveled in Germany with Steve and have enjoyed his gourmet cooking. Steve was certainly a very gifted and kind person. He will be missed by all that knew him. Rest in peace Steve.

To a very special friend and teacher. Steve was always such a wonderful cook man when I worked with him at Sierra high school he would always bring special delicacies for me to heat up so we had an amazing gourmet lunch when he had got his lunch break. He touched so many students, the correct punctuation, and use of grammar by little jingles that he came up with on his own to help the students remember. He touched so very many lives. He will be greatly missed by very very many people..

Steve was such a special teacher. I have heard kids repeating verses, etc. that he taught them to help them remember something. I think students felt honored to be in his classes. He was tough but made learning fun and interesting. He will be missed!

My heart is broken. We shared a wall for years at Sierra. On my very first day of teaching ever, Steve admitted to me that he was nervous on ever first day of school, and we were friends from then on. Steve was my mentor and my friend. He helped ground me as a young teacher; he gave me great financial and cooking advice. Thank goodness he taught me the Preposition Song and all his grammar secrets. He had the most beautiful soul. You couldn’t have a better friend than Steve. The picture of Steve and me from the year he was inducted into the Sierra Hall of Fame has sat on my desk every day of my career. Thank goodness for all the memories, Este. See you in the next world.

What a wonderful man, teacher and mentor. He made me fall in love with literature and reading and having passion for learning 30+ years ago at Sierra High School. One of my favorite teachers ever. I think of him often and when I do I'm always smiling. His spirit, we all know, will forever continue on. My love goes out to his family and friends at this time.

I met Steve at WIU, where I majored in German. Naturally, Steve's love of travel was an interest we had in common. Steve's sense of humor and intellect made him a joy to be around. Our nickname for him was "Schatzi". His talent at playing the violin amazed us. We both ended up teaching for many years, but he was beyond gifted at that as well.
Steve will be dearly missed. My condolences to the family.

Steve was my lifelong friend. We met at Wilson Jr. High in 1966. Our friendship continued at Moline High School. At Western Illinois University, we were on the same dorm floor. Our friendship continued through the years with many trips back and forth between Arizona and Colorado. My favorite time with Steve was going together to visit his relatives in Germany. He was brilliant, talented, creative, kind, witty, and supportive. Life won’t be the same without him. He will always be alive in my heart.

Steve was a truly good man. But the most important thing I remember about Steve is that he was a teacher and a mentor. Steve was always there to work with and encourage his students even long after they left his classroom. The thing I first think of though when I think of Steve is that he was a friend even when you were going through your hardest times. God Bless you Steve. Travel on my friend. Dana Anstey
