Obituary of Anita Joyce (Huery) Garrett

Anita Joyce (Huery) Garrett was born on April 30, 1954 to Joyce Richardson and Ivory Files. 

She was raised and educated in the Colorado Springs school system while getting first hand work experience as a young model. Later in life, she met Alfred D. Exum Jr. To this union, they welcomed three children; a son, Alexander Exum, and two daughters, Alissa Johnson and Adrena Exum. 

Anita was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with family and singing. One of her biggest joys was giving each family member their own personal birthday song, and that was always a big hit that could never be out done.

Not one to be overly social with outsiders, Anita was wholeheartedly about family bonding and doing it in her own unique way. Among her children, there are still sibling arguments going on as to which child was her favorite.

Anita took to the phone like a fish to water. She could spend hours upon hours talking to family and close friends while rarely talking to the same person more than once in a day. Trust and believe that none of those conversations ever took place while a Madea movie was playing, that's for sure.

Throughout her life, Anita was always surrounded with love, and going into her final moments was no exception. Surrounded by family, Anita departed this life and received her angel wings in the early morning hours on July 4, 2023.

Anita was preceded in death by her parents, Joyce Richardson and Ivory Files; four siblings, Walter Huery, Michael Smith, Richardene Huery, and Gail Ann Rosado.

She leaves to cherish in her memory three children; son Alexander Exum of Colorado Springs, Colorado;  two daughters, Alissa Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Adrena Exum of Cameron, North Carolina; her life partner, Steven Perkins of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three siblings, Ronnie Huery, Deonne Huery, and Carolyn Fernandez of Colorado Springs, Colorado; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
