Obituary of Elsie Maria Madrid Gomez
Elsie Maria Madrid Gomez died at her home at the age of 91.
She was born in Chama, New Mexico and graduated from Chama High School. Elsie was the youngest daughter of Fabian Madrid and Josefa Gallegos Madrid. Her sisters who are all deceased were Frances Martinez, Genoveva Suazo, Bessie Maestas, Rosana Gonzales, Vera Alcon, Cora Trujillo, and step-sisters Juanita Ulibarri and Reyecita Romero. In addition, she has many nieces and nephews from her sisters and from her husband’s family that she loved dearly and enjoyed visiting with them throughout the years.
Elsie met and married her deceased husband, Elfego Gomez Jr. in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on December 13, 1954. During her twenty years as an Army military wife, Elsie lived in Texas, Panama, California, New Mexico, Germany, Illinois and finally in Colorado Springs for sixty-eight years. When her husband retired from the Army, they worked together as co-owners of Barberio Cheese house in the Citadel Mall from 1972-1979. After retirement from Barberio’s, Elsie and her husband Elfego enjoyed traveling to many countries in Europe and South America during their sixty-three years of marriage.
Elsie was devoted to her 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Her children, Antoinette (Sommer) Gomez and Elfego Gomez III, currently live in Colorado Springs. Her grandchildren Joshua Sommer, Emily (Sommer) Gonyer and her spouse Kevin Gonyer reside in Ohio, Alejandro and wife Hillary Gomez and Dominique Gomez and husband Mark Wittman live in Colorado. Her great grandchildren in Ohio are Andros, Keegan, Ethan, and Rowan and in Colorado are Leia, Ida and Lola.
During the years 1963-2007, Elsie belonged to many bowling leagues in Illinois and in Colorado Springs. She enjoyed bowling in City, State and National tournaments with highlights when she bowled in the Pro-Am tournaments in Las Vegas.
Elsie was a devout Catholic throughout her life. In Colorado Springs, she was a member of Sacred Heart, Holy Family, Our Lady of Guadalupe and lastly St. Joseph’s parish. Along with friends, she created and participated in a Spanish speaking Rosary group for many years.
In lieu of flowers, plant Elsie’s favorite flower, Shasta Daisy in your garden, and if desired, a memorial contribution to a homeless shelter in your home town.
