Obituary of Merle Edward Newton

Merle E. Newton of Falcon, Colorado passed away unexpectedly at home, on May 24, 2023. He was 84 years old. 

Merle was born February 6, 1939 in Dakota City, Iowa to Harry and edna Newton, one of seven children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Britt, Iowa. Merle graduated from Britt High School in 1957. 

In 1961, he married Mary Weiland and had two daughters. Mary Preceded Merle in death in 1981. 

Merle worked for United States Gypsum in Fort Dodge, Iowa for many years in Mechanical engineering. Then he became the Production Manager for the Messenger Newspaper of Fort Dodge, Iowa.  

In 1982, he marries Betty Julius. 

In 1986 Merle, Betty, and their three children moved to Colorado Springs to start a new life in the mountains of Colorado. After he moved to Colorado Springs, Merle utilized his expertise in printing machine maintenance at Deluxe Checks and later retired to enjoy camping with his wife in their RV. His and Betty enjoyed their time camping with the Trailblazers RV Club. Merle was an avid outdoorsman.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, puzzles, and gardening. He loved the spacious beauty of the Rocky Mountains. 

He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Shelly (Vince) Newton of Marshalltown, Iowa, Sara Newton of the United Kingdom; stepchildren, Kevin Julius of Seattle, Washington, Jeffery (Carolyn) Julius of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Kristen (Joshua) Goure of Woodinville, Washington; granddaughter, April (Shane) Essam of Beatrice, Nebraska; step-grandchildren, Jordan and Justin Julius of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and three great-grandchildren, of Beatrice, Nebraska. Merle is also survived by his brothers, Steve Newton and Don Newton; sisters, Evelyn Hill and Lois Desart. 

He was preceded in death by sisters, Janice Burger and Virginia Gilbert.

Private Services will be held at a later date in Ford Dodge, Iowa.
