Obituary of Carmela Joann Mondragon

Carmela JoAnn Mondragon passed away peacefully on May 18, 2023, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 

Born July 16, 1959, in Embudo, New Mexico, she spent the majority of her childhood in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. 

A studious, precocious child, Carmela excelled in school and spent many of her childhood days loving and caring for her younger siblings. Learning to cook from a young age, she was a talented cook throughout her life. 

She graduated top of her class from Taos High School and attended New Mexico State University. Breaking gender barriers, Carmela earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Following graduation, she settled in Colorado Springs where she had two daughters with her former spouse, Greg McBroom. Carmela worked a few engineering jobs before ultimately settling at Oracle where she worked as a project manager for nearly twenty years. 

Carmela had a deep love of the outdoors and could often be found atop a mountain skiing, hiking, or gardening flowers in her beautiful backyard. She loved traveling and experienced much of what this beautiful world has to offer. With a gregarious attitude and smile for anyone she met, she had friends from all over the world and all walks of life. She was actively involved in her religious faith and spent many years as a lector coordinator at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church. 

She is predeceased by her grandparents. 

She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Matthew) Sarda of Colorado Springs, Colorado and KrisAnn (Nolan) McBroom of Pueblo West, Colorado; parents, Chris and Corrine Mondragon of Gilbert, Arizona; sister, Caryn Gose of Gilbert, Arizona; brother, Christopher Mondragon of Laguna Niguel, California; nieces and nephews; countless cousins, aunts and uncles; and her four beautiful grandchildren, Noah, Cameron, Bennett, and Madelyn. 

Celebration of Life, 10:00AM Saturday, June 17th, 2023, St. Gabriel the Archangel, 8755 Scarborough Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80920.   

A small burial service will take place at a later date in Phoenix, Arizona.
