Ernie and I met six years ago when I was looking to buy The Roland Reed Collection, and I am incredibly grateful for the time we spent together. He and Jan's dedication over a five year span, driving many miles, to research and write Alone with the Past, will be remembered as a valuable contribution to our Nation's history. Over the years I was always able to call him with specific questions about Roland Reed, which he undoubtedly had answers to. Now with his passing, I will rely on his book as my encyclopedia and bible, filled with meticulous detail. I truly enjoyed getting to know Ernie through presentations we gave together, and the many conversations we've had. My thoughts continue to be with Jan and the family. Jace Romick

Ernie Lawrence As you likely know Ernie loved history. Our family first saw his passion when he purchased Photography of Roland Reed from Kramer Gallery in the early 80’s. Ernie’s interest in Reed’s work kept building and he took on the task of documenting his work in a beautiful book, supported and published by Afton Press, in 2012. He used the Reed images reproduced from the Glass Plate Negatives purchased by Kramer Gallery in 1978 . Lee Kramer worked closely with Ernie in the research phase and was in awe of his thoroughness. Ernie’s approach to research was done with a tenacious style. He found new family members and captured their understandings of Reed’s work and life. He visited his homestead. He uncovered so many new pieces of material. He talked to Reed Photo Collectors across the country. So many people tried to get Reed’s Legacy documented, but it took Ernie to get it done. Ernie identified Roland Reed as one of the premier Photographers alongside Curtiss, that documented the lives of the Native American People. Ernie identified himself as an artist and as an author in the writing of Alone With The Past. On behalf of all of the Kramer Gallery Family we send our deepest condolences. Our gratitude will continue for the work and dedication Ernie gave tirelessly, to accurately document the life’s work of Roland Reed. Importantly Ernie’s words and creativity facilitated Reed’s imagery to highlight the life of the beautiful, hardworking and proud Native American People at the turn of the century. We give great tribute to Ernie and his legacy as a researcher, author and artist. Our Best Regards to you Jan and to all of your beautiful family. Thank you for sharing Ernie and his gifts!
