Obituary of Kristen Margaret MacKey

Kristin "Kris" Margaret MacKey was born in Grafton, North Dakota on December 30, 1945, to Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Ensrud, the youngest of five children.

At the age of seven, she moved with the family to Havre, Montana, where her father was Superintendent of Schools.

After graduating from Havre High School, she attended Montana State University, was a member of Kappa Delta sorority, and attained a degree in elementary education in 1967.  While there, she met her future husband, Leonard. The relationship blossomed into a fifty-five-year marriage.

Kris’ first teaching job was as a kindergarten teacher in a school for the children of migrant farm workers in Mission, Texas. During her teaching career, she taught on both the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana, as well as two Hutterite colonies just south of the Canadian border in north central Montana.

Upon Leonard’s retirement in 1995, they relocated to Nevada where she earned certification as a Montessori instructor (early childhood) and taught for three years in a Montessori school in Minden, Nevada.

They moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2008 to be near their son and daughter-in-law and resided north of Falcon, Colorado, until her passing.

She was a member of the women’s group PEO for over fifty years, and during that time served in all officer positions including multiple terms as Chapter President. It was one of the paramount joys of her life, and she valued it until her death.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard; their son, Jim (Terry) MacKey; four step-grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Memorial Service, 1:00PM, Friday, March 3, 2023, Grace Community Church, 9475 Grace Church View, Falcon, Colorado 80831.
