Obituary of Kyla Lanae Couch

Kyla Lanae Couch, also known as Sam, was born on October 28, 2009 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, we lost a beautiful and bright soul. Kyla passed away unexpectedly in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the young age of 13.

She is survived by her parents, Jason Couch and Amber Owens of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and her sister, Lenisa Couch of Colorado Springs, Colorado; her grandparents, Christopher and Vonnie Rousseau of Fort Worth, Texas, Sandi Thiessen (Jerald Manasco) of Seguin, Texas, Cody and Cindy Owens of Rush Springs, Oklahoma, and Johnny and Laura Ledbetter of Portales, New Mexico; her great-grandparents, John Ledbetter of Portales, New Mexico, Jim and Rhonda Alexander of Ben Wheeler, Texas, Marci McGraw of Tularosa, New Mexico, and Monty and Dixie Owens of White House, Texas; her great-great-grandmother, Mary Jo Cherry of Ben Wheeler, Texas; her uncles and aunts, Steven and Anna Couch of Austin, Texas, Christopher Rousseau II of Fort Worth, Texas, Kayla Owens of Royce City, Texas, Cheyanne Owens of Ben Wheeler, Texas, Zachary Williams of Seguin, Texas, and Katie and Troy Hall of Clovis, New Mexico; her great-aunt, Sherry Yarbrough of Lake Lafone, Texas; great-uncle, Colt Owens of Portales, New Mexico; her cousins, Anthony Ruiz of Ben Wheeler, Texas, Ava Couch of Austin, Texas, Asher, Haven, and Harper Hall of Portales, New Mexico; and various other cousins and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, David Couch of Portales, New Mexico; great-grandparents, Darrell "Grandpa Coffee" and Elizabeth Martin of Portales, New Mexico, Julia Yvonna Martin of Portales, New Mexico; her great-grandparents, Rick Thiessen of Portales,
New Mexico, Margaret Knight Ledbetter of Portales, New Mexico; her great-great-grandmother, Norene Ledbetter of Portales, New Mexico; great-great-grandmother, Mildred Moyers of Clovis, New Mexico; and her great-uncle, Michael Ledbetter of Portales, New Mexico.

Kyla was a Daddy’s Girl. She loved going fishing with her dad, and would try to beat him at catching the most fish, which she did a lot of the time. I guess he taught too her well. She enjoyed going camping with her family and their dogs Axel, Leeza, Bear and Oreo.

Kyla loved spending time with her mom, and loved to go on hiking trips with her. She always wanted to be in the water, and her mom would always have to venture out with her, even when it was freezing. Kyla and her mom connected with their love for animals, and were partners in crime. She loved watching movies with her mom and was her mom’s best friend.

She loved hanging out with, and picking on, her sister Lenisa. She loved playing practical jokes on her and wrestling her to the ground when she was younger. When they would go out, people thought Kyla was the oldest sister because she was so much taller than her sister. Kyla and her sister would go on frequent "sister dates" and loved to get Iced Reese’s Chocolate Milks from Dutch Bros. She always made fun of her sister for working with kids because Kyla claimed she could never have the patience her sister had.

Kyla was also a Grandma Rousseau Girl. Always video chatting and talking about anything with her. She loved to sing and do karaoke nights with her grandma. She loved cooking with Grandma when she was little, and was amazed when she cracked her first egg. She loved her grandma's cooking, and would ask for it every time she saw her. She had an open relationship where she felt she could talk about anything and everything with her and would not be judged. She knew Grandma loved her just as she was.

Kyla loved making Grandpa Rousseau her ‘horsey’ and did so even after she got too big. She loved beating him at mini golf and going on summer trips to their house. Her grandpa and Uncle Chris built her and her sister a tree house at their Grandpa Coffee’s house, and she spent days swinging away. He always spent so many mornings going turtle and frog hunting with her. She loved picking on him, but then after hours of picking on him she would cuddle and tell him she loved him.

Kyla loved spending time with her Uncle Chris, watching him play games on the computer when she was little or talking computer nerd stuff with him when she got older. They had their own special lingo. She always told him she loved him and wanted to be a gamer like him.

She enjoyed spending time with Uncle Steven, he was always making her laugh. She loved baking cookies with Aunt Anna. At their wedding, while walking down the aisle as their flower girl, she dropped her basket and started chasing a bird. She had some great dance moves too on the dance floor, dancing in the sand barefoot on the beach.

She loved her family in Texas, and enjoyed going out there for summer vacations. She loved to fish in her memaw’s river, and loved the beach. She was always a horse girl and wanted to ride horses like her Aunt Cheyanne. She even spent one summer running away from an evil goat that chased her into her aunt’s house and tried to knock the door down. She loved doing winter activities with her Aunt Kayla but had to make sure she added her to her list of people to tease. She loved to tease her aunts about their animals as well.

Kyla "Sam" attended Jenkins Middle School and was a 7th grader. She was in Orchestra and played the Violin. She was a Soccer player for many years and was known for her aggressive style, and was called the ‘Beast’, because no one could get around her. Kyla had tons of passions and hobbies. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, hanging out and playing online games with them. She loved scaring people, and at Halloween her and dad would dress up and scare people just for laughs. She was a horror fanatic and loved anything horror themed. Her 13th birthday was even horror themed. She was a very talented artist and loved drawing and 3D printing. Her friends were always asking for her to draw them something, and she loved doing that for her friends. She had a hilarious sense of humor, and loved playing jokes on people to see them laugh.

Kyla’s best friend however, is her dog Axel. Kyla was given Axel as a present in June of 2021, and was in love with him from the start. Axel was Kyla’s whole world and Kyla made sure she took great care of him. She would take him for daily walks and always wanted to buy him new toys. She loved taking him to her sister’s house so he could play with Leeza, his girlfriend. Kyla was so proud to have something to take care of herself, and she was the best fur mom around.

Kyla was brave because she was not afraid of being herself, regardless of what others would say, and she would stand up for herself when her peers would bully her. Kyla was such a brilliant, loving, and compassionate person. She would always step up when she had friends or family in need. She cared very deeply about how others felt, and how they were being treated. She would go out her way to make sure they were included and felt safe, and to let them know that they were not alone during their difficult situations. She had a heart of gold, if only she had reached out to others for herself.
