Barbara Girga-Meuleman

Obituary of Barbara Ann Girga-Meuleman

Barbara Ann Meuleman, of Bakersfield, California, who recently moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, sadly passed away on January 28, 2023 at the age of 85. She passed surrounded by loved ones, one day shy of the three-year-passing anniversary of her husband, Andries. She was a wonderful and supportive mother who was always there when we needed her. She also had many friends and was a well-loved member of the community in Bakersfield.

She was predeceased by her father, C. Virgil Fisher; mother, Marjorie Diehl; twin brother, Bernie (Bo) Fisher; brother, Bob Fisher; and husband, Andries Meuleman.

She leaves behind brother, William (Sonny) Fisher; children, Sue Fernandez, and Robert Girga; grandchildren, Brandi, Tania, Faith, Kristin, Jessica and Nick; as well as great-grandchildren, Gavin, Ava and Sophia. She was blessed to have had a loving relationship with her step-children in the Netherlands.

She was born to parents Virgil and Marjorie Fisher on October 11, 1937 in Rayland, Ohio. Barbara moved to California in 1969, where she raised her kids and continued her education. She was a graduate of Kentucky Christian College, California State Bakersfield, and University of California - Santa Barbara, where she majored in English and religious studies. She then achieved a master's degree in communication and counseling while working full-time as a single mom. After graduating and getting licensed in marriage, family, and child counseling, she became self-employed as a psychotherapist until she retired in 1997, moved to Holland, and married Andries, “the love of her life.” After Andries’ retirement, they returned to Bakersfield, California to live out the rest of their lives together.

She will be missed and will always hold a place in our hearts.
