Obituary of Kedrick Griffith Freyschlag

Kedrick Griffith (KG) Freyschlag passed away on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the age of 83.KG leaves behind his wife, Karen; three children, Griffith Anson Freyschlag (wife, Lisa), Sharon Freyschlag Williams (husband, James), and Jeffrey Scott Freyschlag (wife, Kathy); nine grandchildren; and brother, Pete Freyschlag.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Anson Freyschlag.KG was born August 22, 1927 in Glendale, California and shortly thereafter moved to Colorado Springs. KG graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1944 and enlisted in the US Maritime Service. After the war he attended and graduated from Colorado College, he then received a MA from Stanford University, and returned to Colorado College to teach journalism. He also became the Director of Public Relations for the college.From 1955 to 1975, KG was employed by the Exchange National Bank as Senior Vice President of Marketing and then as Vice President of Marketing for Mountain Banks (Colorado National Banks). His love for the community of Colorado Springs was evidenced by his involvement in many areas including the Air Force Association, Air Academy National Bank, and Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo. KG was also honored to work along with other community leaders in raising funds for and building the Veterans' Memorial dedicated in 1969 in Memorial Park.After retiring from banking, KG was asked to head the project of moving the Penrose Rodeo Stadium at the Broadmoor to its current site. The completion of this project and his involvement in the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo (PPBR) for over 25 years led to his installation into the PPBR Hall of Fame in 2002.In the 70's his passion for skiing led to his owning and operating the Ski Shop on Tejon Street and the Ski Shop at Ski Broadmoor with his wife, Barbara.The community continued to call throughout KG's life. He served as a member and then as the volunteer president of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and helped to found and grow the Manufacturer's Group. Later, he became President and CEO of the Chamber, increasing membership and ending the budget deficit. During his life he also played a major role in bringing the Air Force Academy to Colorado Springs, raising money to finance their golf course and getting the new Colorado Springs Airport built.KG also loved acting and participating in many community theater productions as well as performing in various radio and TV commercials over the years.KG was an avid golfer who thoroughly enjoyed his many years of golfing with his family and friends. KG was a member of the Broadmoor Golf Club, El Paso Club, Garden of the Gods Club, The 100 Club at the AFA, the American Red Cross, United Way and District 12 School Board.A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church.In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Pikes Peak Hospice or the Evans Scholarship c/o the Broadmoor Golf Club.
