Obituary of W. Dean Smith

Dean enjoyed a long, productive and fulfilling life devoted to family, career and service to others. He is survived by his three children, Melissa, Whit and Benn; his grandchildren, Tyler, Piper, Shawnie, Kira, Casey, and Clara; his great granddaughter, Sophia; son-in-law, Tad and daughter-in-law, Jenny. He was preceded in death by his loved and devoted wife, Eleanor.Dean graduated from Omaha North High School and went on to earn his bachelors degree in Engineering from Omaha University. He served in the Army Air Corps Reserve during World War II. After the war, Dean founded a general contracting business and built homes, schools, community centers and nursing homes in five states during the span of his forty year building career. In the1990's he began a second career as director of the Boxelder Sanitation District in Fort Collins, Colorado, expanded the capacity of the district, and received the SDA's Distinguished Manager's Award in 1995. He served as Secretary of the Western Coalition of Arid States.He was a lifelong dedicated Christian Scientist, serving his church in many capacities: First Reader, Chairman of the Board, and Sunday School teacher. He loved mentoring innumerable friends and associates in a wide variety of pursuits, dedicating his time to helping others. He served on numerous community boards, including the Homebuilders Association, the YMCA, and HOA's.Dean had a remarkable zest for life, flying his own airplane for three decades, sailing the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and reading avidly about the world around him.
