Obituary of Flora Marie Holmes

Flora Holmes, a longtime Colorado Springs resident, passed away July 6 at the age of 79 after a lifetime of service to the community. Ms. Holmes retired as a school social worker with District 11, where she advocated for children and families. She also assisted many immigrant families who settled in the Colorado Springs area.A soprano with the Colorado Springs Chorale, she sang with the chorale for three decades. She was also an activist for peace and human rights issues. Her life is profiled in the oral histories at the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum.Ms. Holmes received her masters degree in social work from the University of Iowa, associates degree from Graceland College, and her bachelors degree from Augustana College.Surviving her are two sisters, Marilyn King of Lewiston, New York, and Patrice Griffith of Seattle, Washington; two nephews, Kevin and Gregory King of Renton, Washington, and Evans, Georgia; and a niece Shoshana Griffith of Madison, Wisconsin.A memorial service celebrating Flora's life will be held at 10:30am Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Community of Christ Church, 2502 Palmer Park Blvd, Colorado Springs.
