Dr. Paul Durray was one of the first scientists I spoke with about Lyme disease in 1992. He was a rational and scientific voice at a time when great clarity and accuracy was needed. Paul exemplified clarity and accuracy when he lectured, and in the research that he did. It is impossible to know how many people he helped from his research, but I know he helped me. Ever since speaking with him and exchanging emails I have maintained that his pathology approach to Lyme was the only approach that gave us the truth and depth of how insidious Lyme disease truly is. He was generous, and plain spoken and is loved and appreciated by those who had the privilege to know and work with him. Thank You Dr. Durray for your dedication and caring! Tom Grier

Paul was a friend and colleague in the Laboratory of Pathology at the NCI. He taught me most of what I know about melanoma and prostate cancer diagnosis. He was always smiling and ready to look at a difficult case with me. He had a wonderful self-deprecating sense of humor. I will miss him greatly.

Paul was a wonderful pathologist, and an engaging teacher who excited residents about pathology. He had a wealth of knowledge and enjoyed sharing it with others. We all were in awe of his experiences as a flight surgeon in Iraq and his long time involvement with our military. My thoughts go out to his wife, Esther, whom he cherished, and his family. It took a brave man to do the work Paul did, in the times in which he did it. Researchers were ridiculed, and demoted for telling the truth about what they saw through the lenses of their microscopes instead of the lens of future career advancement. Cronic or congenital borreliosis wasn't something anybody wanted to talk about. The attitude was "you can't do anything about it. Too many people have it. It will bankrupt the insurance and health care system if you try." To that we replied, "it will bankrupt the health care system, and this Nation if you DON'T do something about tick bourn illnesses. Every time we lose a Paul Duray, we lose generations of wisdom and integrity. It will take 80 years for us to understand what that man understood and was forced to keep to himself because of the political climate in which he lived.

Lyme Education Awareness Program is grateful for Dr. Duray's service and many research contributions. L.E.A.P.'s President, Tina J. Garcia, met Dr. Duray while he served on the IDSA Lyme Review Panel at the IDSA hearing in Washington, DC in 2009. Tina remembers the meeting well. "Dr. Duray approached me after the hearing and spoke to me about my testimony to the Panel; he was very kind and supportive and he made me chuckle. He said, 'That was quite a presentation! When you talk, I listen!' Dr. Duray exhibited an interest and concern for the plight of Lyme disease patients. Dr. Duray's lifelong service and research contributions are the finest example of a meaningfully-focused person dedicated to enriching humanity. I am moved by Dr. Duray's passing and on behalf of L.E.A.P.'s board, express our deepest condolences to his family." Tina J. Garcia, President Lyme Education Awareness Program www.leaparizona.com
