Many friends have expressed their sorrow at Mom's passing, but also their joy at having known her; the following direct quotes from their condolence cards truly honor her life and have greatly blessed Jake, Robin and I: "We will always remember Mary with affection and admiration" "Many fond memories"; a wonderful person....a great bridge player" "She will be missed and always remain in our hearts" "Mary was one of a kind....a true friend; dear friend to all who knew her" "She was a remarkable woman; gracious and truthful....it was a pleasure to have known her" "It was a joy to spend some time with such a lovely lady" "Jake and Mary: a true love story" "She was a beautiful lady with lots of spirit and a great sense of humor....she had a certain style that we all loved" Lastly, from one of her caregivers: "The most respectful lady I've ever cared for...easy, loving... I loved her dearly"

Jake Accola's favored verse in remembrance of his beloved wife of 66 years: To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To appreciate beauty to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Written by Jake Accola To Mary Derrick on Dec 29, 1946. ("Elliot" is FDR's son; "Elsie Robinson" was a well-known New York Evening Journal columnist.") Dear Miss Derrick, Tyrone Power is still alive; The Elks Club is just a dive; Roosevelt, we could do without (Boy, then, would we really shout!) Eleanor sure loves to roam, Doesnt she know she has a home; Time for Elliot another star, Personally Id give him tar!! Columbia is a lovely place, Running Cedaredge quite a race; Walter Winchell is a pain, Probably hes not quite sane; Elsie Robinson doesnt know Corn is planted in a row; All these facts are very clear To anyone who can see and hear; But more important is the following: You are ill and I am sorrowing. JP Accola
