Obituary of Vernon Lee McFarlin

Born December 22, 1932 to Roy and Mary McFarlin, Vern slipped peacefully away on May 25, 2013 after suffering a sudden massive stroke.Vern was united in marriage to Dorothy (Edgington) on December 22, 1960 in Colorado Springs. He is survived by his wife Dottie; five children, Steven Stachar, Vicki Keeney (Jim), Debra McFarlin-Lopez (Ralph), Rodney McFarlin and Kenny McFarlin; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great- grandchildren.Coming from a large family, Vern is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mary McFarlin, and six brothers and sisters. He is survived by five sisters, Florence McFarlin, Ethel White (Vernon), Evelyn Allen, Vera Colbert and Betty Tullis and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.Vern grew up in Fondis, Colorado attending high school in Calhan. He served in the Air Force for a time, after which he worked in construction and later formed a landscaping business with his wife, Dottie. He and Dottie moved to California in 1988 where they lived in the Cherry Valley-Hemet area for almost 20 years, returning in 2007 to reside in Florence, Colorado.In his younger years he was a member of the 4H and later served as a volunteer Cub Scout Leader in the mid 70s. He loved gardening, tinkering in his shop, attending auctions, collecting belt buckles, bells and horses and helping his family with their "next big project".Vern will be remembered by us all as an honorable man who knew no stranger and had an anecdote or story about anything.Special thanks to the Paramedics, Flight for Life Crew and especially to the medical staff at St. Francis and St. Anthony's for their attention to Vern and their boundless compassion and assistance to his family.Memorial Service will be held 2:00PM, Friday, June 7, 2013 at The Springs Funeral Services 3115 E. Platte Avenue, Colorado Springs.
