Obituary of Kelly John Mertens
Kelly John Mertens, age 61, went home to be with his Lord Jesus late Saturday night, July 20th, 2013 following a long battle with a brain aneurysm. Kelly was born on December 25th, 1951 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He was son to the late John Mertens, Jr. and Mona Ruth Mertens, and brother to Monica Paplham. He graduated from Sheboygan South High School in 1970 and went on to the University of Wisconsin Whitewater where he graduated second in his School of Business class with a B.A. in Information Systems Technology, Magna Cum Laude. On August 11th 1973, Kelly was united in marriage to Linda Mary Dolfin of Oostburg, Wisconsin. The Ceremony was officiated was by the late Reverend Fredrick Dolfin. Kelly's passing came only a few short days before their 40th wedding anniversary. Kelly spent many years providing great leadership as a Corporate Executive. He had a very successful career in information technology and genuinely cared for his employees. He served First Reformed Church in Oostburg as a Deacon and then as an Elder at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He particularly enjoyed his service and employment for many years at Young Life Ministries. Kelly was a wonderful father, and he led and provided for his family with great love. In addition to his wife Linda, he is survived by his four children: John Paul Mertens, Heather Kay Mertens, James Kelly Mertens, and Gabrielle Joy Mertens. He is also survived by his five grandchildren; Sabrina, Teaya, Joy, Hannah, and Bethany. A Memorial Celebration will be held Thursday July 25th, 2013 at New Life Church's World Prayer Center Chapel at 4:00 PM. In the coming months, there will also be a memorial service held at First Reformed Church in Oostburg, WI. Time and date TBD. Kelly had a tremendous Christian Faith that was evident in every aspect of his life; even in his recent health struggles. He will be greatly missed by all lives that were touched by his strong, fun-loving, and devoted spirit. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund that has been established for Kelly's daughter Gabby's college fund through Ent Federal Credit Union. Donations should be made to the "Kelly Mertens Memorial Fund" and sent to Ent, P.O. Box 15819, Colorado Springs, CO 80935.
