Bicycle Experience near Bristol Brewery has John Cotton's books and 2 bikes for us to share. He gave so much to us all, we need to drop a photo framed to the shop so folks can see his amazing smile. How many times did he help us out? Uncountable! Amazing energy John had and I'm happy we can still feel his warmth!

The world has lost a great man and a hero of mine. While training for the 1998 world track championships my tandem partner and I broke several disc wheels and were the kings of failure. John took Casey and I under his wing and kept us inspired in our darkest hours, and encouraged us to rise to the challenge be be the best we could be. John inspired many athletes to reach their dreams. He had a way to bring out the best in people. I think of John often because he helped me become the cyclist and person I wanted to be. The bar Fred Cappy set in place was raised to new levels by John. I heaven John and Carl Leusenkamp will never have to worry about keeping the rubber side down in the sprinters lane.

John, if not for you, I would have never come back to the track after my first visit. It was you who encouraged me, you who helped me and you who made it fun. I made a good friend when I met you. I'm going to miss you "buddy"!

You were there first for my niece as she navigated the challenging arena of the velodrome with an encouraging smile and willing ear. You were there to walk the track with me each morning at PVH always with a smile and enthusiasm. And a funny story! May you finally find peace. Jolee

It was 2005 and I was just back from Iraq. John helped me use a return to cycling to bring me home again. He was wonderfully kind and helpful to my daughter as she learned the sport. I last saw him at the L.A. track and gave him a big hug. I am so glad I did. He is one of those people I think about often, and it is so obvious that he touched so many lives. His was a life well lived. See you later John, Until then I will miss you........

To echo was others have said here, John was the most helpful, amazing individual. He was a fixture at the track during the 90's and was always ready and willing to lend a hand in any possible way, whether it was offering advice or encouragement, wrenching, helping out with equipment, taking splits during training, helping to practice standing starts or running motorpace sessions. But beyond that, he was always ready with a smile, a story and a laugh. Track cyclists in particular have always been a close knit family, and John was definitely a huge part of my track family. Rest in peace John. If there is a service, I would like to attend if possible.

John, like Fred Cappy, was a bright spot in the history of the 7-11 velodrome. I can't say that I really knew John outside of that, but there is no reason to think the cheery, upbeat, hardworking person that he was at the track did not extend though out other parts of his life. John, I'll always remember your smile and your selflessness and know those memories will encourage me to emulate you.

My prayers are with John's family and friends. John always greeted us with an open hand and smiling face. He was always present to help and support the riders and staff above and beyond what was asked of him. Fond memories of early morning training sessions and post race bbq's will remain in our hearts. He has touched many lives. My deepest condolences.

When I first started racing, a Hungarian guy named Steve Olah was a mentor to me and Ill never forget him saying "You've got to find a way to get to Colorado Springs. Go to the 7-11 Olympic Velodrome and ask for a guy named John Cotton. He will show you the way" I wrote his name in my journal and made this my mission. Sure enough when I finally made it there he welcomed me in with a warm smile. With a certain pride he showed me rooms filled with cycling posters signed by Indurain, Moser, Rominger, Nelson Vails- the legends. I was in awe. Then a day Ill never forget. Miguel Indurain himself came to the track and John introduced me to him. John told Miguel to stay and watch me ride a kilo. I rode a 1:02.8 right in front of him. John told me after Miguel was nodding in approval. John told me to always be proud of that ride regardless of being beat out by Hartwell and not lining up at Worlds that day. I will never forget what John said, and never forget that day. It brings me tears just remembering. What a great human being.

John-- thank you so much for your tireless work at the velodrome. Thank you for all the tires glued; bikes fixed. Thank for the stories we could share about Cappy, and the smiles that those always brought. Your spirit will continue through the lives of those who knew you. God bless, my friend.

For a sport where people talk about "family" very few truly deserve to be mentioned as such. John was a leader of those few. A tireless worker, motivator, friend, confidant and much much more. With a sad heart I wish you and your family Peace John. Thank you for shaping my life.

John was part of the group of people, many of whom were from Colorado, to work the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and one of a smaller group that knew track racing inside and out ... he brought his love of the sport with him and helped us all keep sane during a challenging event. I, too, hope he can now tell more tales with Cappy and Mary.

John, I'm sorry you've gone. you were like that an uncle that had everyone's best interests at heart, but no one could quite control. that's a good thing (although I heard of one guy whose fancy handlebars you sawed in half because you saw a crack -- he might have mixed feelings), and we are all better for your influence.
