Obituary of Benjamin Leroy Schafer
Benjamin Leroy Schafer, 84, passed away August 14, 2013, in Manassas, Virginia surrounded by the love of his family. Ben was the son of Alvin Joseph and Cora (Cosner) Schafer and was born on September 28, 1928 in Nyssa, Oregon.Ben was one of five children: Sherman (Wanda) Schafer, of WA, Lorene (Perry)Hicks, of WA, Gilbert Schafer, and Iola Jean Schafer, both deceased.Ben is survived by his faithful wife of almost 64 years, Lois Ruth (Dixon)Schafer. The two married on October 14, 1949 in Sunnyside, WA at El Bethel Church. Ben and Lois had 6 children, Patricia Ramsel(deceased), David (Carol) Schafer of TX, Sharla (Vance) Lineberger of VA, Tom Schafer of AZ,Jerry (Tami) Schafer of SD, Sherilyn (Dann) Carlson of VA; and 11 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.In May 1955, Ben moved his family to Colorado Springs, CO to find work and experience with finish carpentry. Ben worked for many different companiesuntil Gerald H. Phipps, Inc. hired him in 1958. He worked for Gerald H. Phipps, Inc. until his retirement. Some of his building projects includedthe Music Arts Building at Colorado College, several downtown office buildings and the United States Air Force Academy Wall and Chapel. While in Colorado, Ben and Lois joined Pulpit Rock Church in 1957, where Ben served as a deacon, and until earlier this year, an usher.A man whose many deeds spoke louder than his few words, Ben was known by his family and his community as a faithful, "still waters run deep" man of God.He was humble, yet strong and provided for his family above all else.A Memorial Service for Ben Schafer will be held 10:30AM, Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Pulpit Rock Church, 301 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Colorado Springs. CO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to R.O.C.K.
