Elijah was a very precious child. When I first started teaching the 4 yr old class, he was my helper. (funny thing is, I thought I was going to be the helper, not the teacher) Turns out I was right, in a way. Elijah did teach me although he didn't know it. His servant's heart was very apparent as he helped with the little ones, did whatever it was I asked, even offered when it wasn't asked, and always, always smiled that sweet, joyful smile. This past Sunday, as I was thinking of him and the beautiful memorial service, a testament to his life, it was bittersweet. As I began to clean up after the children had been picked up, I had a memory of Elijah coming into the room, offering to vacuum the floor for me. He would say, "You go on ahead, I'll get this" When I would say, "Are you sure?" He would say, smiling "Yes, it's ok, I'm going to be here for awhile anyway." Then he would proceed to plug in the vacuum and begin vacuuming the floor. What a precious servant's heart he had. His absence leaves a big void in our lives, but his testimony lives on!
