Doris W. Cook, 92, living at the Good Samaritan Home in Simla, Colorado, passed on February 1, 2014. Doris was a housewife and mother, also having worked outside the home while her daughters were growing up. Her best liked occupation outside the home was being the head cook at Peyton School. She also volunteered at Camp Iana Sunday School, helping cook meals for the campers.Doris was born on May 25, 1921 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was adopted by Francis M. and Dotia (Stevens) Wetmore on June 18, 1921, in Kansas City. The family moved to Central City, Colorado, where her dad was engaged in mining. They later returned to St. Louis, Missouri and lived in several small towns in the area until 1929. In 1929, Doris and her mother rode the train to Denver and then to Elbert, Colorado. They became the telephone operators for the local telephone exchange, while her dad engaged in rebuilding the outside lines in the area. During WWII, Doris and her mother received telegrams through the exchange, which they delivered to community members when military members were injured, killed, or missing in action. Doris attended school in Elbert, Colorado. Memorial Day, 1935, the flood that destroyed most of the town came down the Bijou Creek. Doris and her mother connected all the phone lines on the switch board and sent out distress signals to members of the community. In 1936, school was held in the Russell Gates Mercantile building. Doris was in the first graduating class in the new school in 1938. Doris and Hugh Faughnan were married in 1938. One son, Patric, was born to this union. On August 19, 1945, Doris remarried to Clarence Cook, also of Elbert. They lived in Elbert and Colorado Springs, Colorado where Clarence was employed by Mountain View Electric. In 1948, they moved to Simla, and in 1949, Mountain View reassigned Clarence to be the Service Rep. and was based in Peyton. Doris acted as Clarence's telephone operator, taking calls from service members whose electrical service was interrupted. Daughters, Patsy and Jan were born prior to the move to Peyton and Clarinda (CIar) joined the family after the move to Peyton. The family was active in the community: Doris was the community correspondent to the Pike View Farmer and Ranchland News, a 4H leader in the Peyton Community, active in Peyton Community Baptist Church, where Doris taught classes and was the Sunday School Secretary; as well as involved in Pine Ridge Grange; Plainsmen Saddle Club; Peyton School, and was among the founding members of the Peyton Volunteer Fire Department. After Clarence's retirement, the family was active with Clarence's tractor service. Doris always went with him on jobs as his helper. Clarence passed away on November 12, 1998. Doris remained in their home until September 2010, when she moved to Good Samaritan in Simla, Colorado.
