Obituary of Edythe M. Phelan
Edythe Mae Lowerre Phelan passed away, surrounded by family, on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Mt. St. Francis Nursing Center. Edythe was 96. She was born November 15, 1917 and grew up in Rockaway Beach, New York. Edythe had a loving marriage of 50 years to Lawrence Alexander Phelan. They raised 5 daughters; Maureen Flynn, Gerri Lax, Kathy Phelan, Eileen Phelan de Cruz & Chris Sondermann in a strong loving home in Woodhaven, New York. Edythe and Larry enjoyed retirement in Palm Harbor, Florida until he passed in 1992. Then Edythe relocated to Colorado Springs, where she enjoyed seeing her grandchildren grow up. In Colorado Springs, Edythe also enjoyed her social life with new friends at Regency Towers and her volunteer activities at St. Francis Hospital and at schools throughout District 11, especially Freemont Elementary. Being a recycler since before the word was invented, Edythe donated her body to the School of Medicine at University of Colorado, Denver for medical research and training.In addition to her five daughters, she loved and was loved by her sons-in-law Dr. Edward Flynn, Howard Lax & Sadot Cruz Cordova; five grandchildren, Joseph Famulare (deceased) & Donna Lopez, Daniel Lax, Dylan & Graham Sondermann; and two great-grandchildren Armando and Shawn Lopez.The family is grateful to the staff at Mt. St. Francis Nursing Center for the loving care and support they gave Edythe. A Funeral Mass and lunch in celebration of Edythe's life will be held on Friday, February 21 at 10:30AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church (2650 Parish View off Woodman Road). In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Food for the Poor or Mt. St. Francis Nursing Center.
