Obituary of Jewell Haynes Richards

Jewell Haynes Richards died at Bonaventure Senior Living on April 5, 2014. Jewell was born in Athens, Georgia on January 5, 1921, and was the daughter of Mattie Lewis Haynes and Celius Carswell Haynes. She graduated from Athens High School and began her thirty-five plus year career at Southern Bell, retiring in 1977. She was married for fifty-five years to Walter A. "Jiggs" Richards before his death on November 30, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her older sister, Leona Haynes Seabolt (Mrs. Olin). Mr. and Mrs. Richards never had children of their own, but she is survived by her sister's son, William Carswell Seabolt and his wife, Camilla. As Bill's parents died in their sixties, Aunt Jewell and Uncle Jiggs became the acting paternal grandparents to Camilla and Bill's children: William "Chip" C. (Krista) Seabolt, Jr. of Holland, Michigan; Camilla (Ed) Erwin Seabolt Cribbs of Sterling, Virginia; and Milton Leathers (Marissa) Seabolt of Colorado Springs and their nine children. Also surviving are her cousins, Barbara "Bobbie" Walker and Betty Stephens of Tampa, Florida; her brother-in-law, Allwyne B. ''Pete'' Richards, and his wife, Evelyn; nieces and nephews, Judy and Emmitt Sherling of Jeffersonville, Georgia; Jack and Linda Richards of Winter Springs, Florida; Beverly Eaddy of Gastonia, North Carolina; Allwyne and Peggy Ann Richards of Figuay-Varina, North Carolina; Mary and James Dudley of Morganton, North Carolina; as well as great, and great-great nieces and nephews.Jewell and Jiggs made their home in Athens, Georgia and were charter members of St. James United Methodist Church. Her great-nephews, William C. Seabolt, Jr., Milton Leathers Seabolt, and George H. McCallum, Jr. will preside over the chapel service to be held at Bridges Funeral Home, 3035 Atlanta Highway, Athens, Georgia 30606, on Saturday, April 12th at 2:00PM, with entombment to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
