I enjoyed working with Steve at Hewlett-Packard when we were young engineers. It makes me sad to hear that he has died. I will remember his smiling face and his engaging nature.

Steve was a favorite colleague of mine, we worked together on several projects. I really enjoyed working with him, he was so kind and he always took the time to help and explain things to others. It was a privilege to learn and work with him and to know him. He will be missed.

I had the privilege of working with Steve over the last several years. What he brought to our project was not simply knowledge and skill, but also wit, and humor, and a patient sense that all puzzles can be understood and all problems overcome. Steve published a paper on the design of oscilloscopes that is a fundamental reference for the work that I do. Unlike most engineering documents it is not a dry collection of equations and facts. Steve had a writing talent unusual among engineers. He was able to present his ideas clearly and conversationally, in his own voice. With clever analogies and a dry wit he speaks to us from the page, sharing not just his design ideas, but also his enthusiasm for the topic. When I read his notes, I hear his voice. Technology will move ahead, and the project we worked on will become obsolete, but Steve's paper will remain an important reference in this narrow field. One day, many years from now, a younger colleague will wonder why these circuits are designed the way they are. I'll give her a copy of Steve's notes and he will speak to her with wit, and humor, and patience.

Steve is also survived by many loving friends. His sense of humor, caring and love for others will be missed. He was like an uncle to our children, who have very fond memories of him. He taught our daughter to drive, shoot trap and skeet and ski. He is also remembered for his many hunting trips with Mark, which were planned for months before and enjoyed for months after.

I was very fortunate to work with Steve over the past 10 years and became good friends. His zest for figuring out clever ways to solve engineering problems and determination to always do his best inspired me to do the same. He had a special calming affect that I admired whenever we had to solve really tough technical problems, and would sprinkle in his special humor at the right time. He will be missed both as an engineerâ
