Obituary of Jean Ethel Singer

Long time Upton and Newcastle resident, Jean Singer, passed away July 1, 2014 at St Francis Nursing Center in Colorado Springs, CO. She was ninety-one.Jean was born, Jean Ethel Wilcox, June 21, 1923 to Ethel Anne (Harrison) and Ralph Barnard Wilcox in Oelrichs, South Dakota. She spoke fondly about how she loved living on a ranch and much preferred riding horses with her father over cooking and cleaning. She attended the local schools and earned her Bachelors and Masters Degrees at Chadron State College. She taught elementary school for many years in South Dakota and Wyoming, including, Newcastle and Upton. She married George Albert Singer, May 26, 1952 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, in Newcastle. They have three children, John (Cyndy) Singer of Newcastle, Robin (Charles) Reppond of Chuckey, TN, and Ronda (Brian) Watt of Colorado Springs, CO.During her time in Upton and Newcastle, Jean was active in many community organizations. She also enjoyed bowling, ceramics, painting, reading, and swimming. She participated in the Senior Olympics and qualified for National Senior Olympics multiple times in swimming and bowling.After retiring in 1982, Jean continued to stay very active and loved to travel, especially on bus tours. In 2007, she moved to Colorado Springs, CO.In addition to her three children, Jean is survived by ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and her sister, Thelma McPherson. Preceding her in death are her husband, George, grandson, James Reppond, and two brothers, Robert and Ralph.A funeral mass will be offered for Jean at her current parish, Holy Apostles, in Colorado Springs.
