Obituary of David L. Birkhead
David L Birkhead, gentle brother, died in his home July 5, 2014. David was born in Frederick, Oklahoma October 19, 1942. Parents were Herbert C. Birkhead and Eugenia C. McChesney Birkhead. David grew up in Oklahoma, Indiana, Florida, Alaska, Kansas, Alabama and Germany until the family moved to Colorado Springs in 1966. He began a long tenure as a mail handler at Peterson Air Force Base in 1967, originally as a civil service employee from until 1993 and then with civilian contractors there until 1998. Then from 1998 to 2008, David contributed to the mission of the American Red Cross as a maintenance worker. It was part of his nature to give more than those around him expected. Without his attentive presence, our mother, who died in 2008, would never have remained as independent as she did after the loss of our father in 1991. David excelled in assisting others. He was proudest of his contributions to the Lions Club, his involvement with Cheyenne Village and his membership in the Palmer Park Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He is survived by two brothers, Roy Birkhead of Tokyo, Japan and John Birkhead of Colorado Springs. Sadly, a third brother Douglas Birkhead of Salt Lake City died in 2002. A service to celebrate David's many contributions will be held 10:30 AM, Monday, July 14 at the LDS Temple located at 2750 Melissa Drive in Colorado Springs. Donations to Cheyenne Village in David's name are strongly encouraged. Funeral Home:The Springs Funeral Services3115 East Platte AvenueColorado Springs, , COUS 80909
