Obituary of Athene "Lucille" Giella

Athene Lucille (Howe) Giella was born October 25, 1912, on a farm in Elk County, Kansas and departed this life October 16, 2014, just nine days shy of her 102nd birthday. She was the second of eight children (five of whom have preceded her in death) and is survived by sisters, Mary Dye of Lees Summit, Missouri and Viola Amon of Topeka, Kansas; plus a number of nieces and nephews.In 1939 Lucille Giella relocated from Kansas to the small city (population about 35, 000) of Colorado Springs and lived with an aunt and uncle. Upon arriving in Colorado Springs, she took a position as a waitress in the Coffee Shop at the Alta Vista Hotel, a job she held until the hotels closing in 1963. She was married May 5, 1948 to Sevino Charles Giella, also of Colorado Springs (formerly New York) who passed in 1991 after a career as a printing press operator with Shepherd's Citations. After the passing of her husband and her retirement she did volunteer work for over 25 years at the Acacia Community Center for Senior Citizen Services.Through her remarkable lifetime, she went from travelling by horse drawn wagon and buggy to the fast age of today. Neither she nor her husband ever owned a car or even learned to drive one. They were, however, consummate experts on the Colorado Springs City bus system, never missing what they never had. In her nearly 102 years, Lucille Giella saw two world wars, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, the assassination of a president, the sending of a man to the moon, and the introduction and development of the cyber age. She delighted at age 15 of listening to the radio occasionally but by age 100, despised television. She enjoyed visits and conversation with family and relished her volunteer work.
