Obituary of Jack Schmidt
Rev. Jack Schmidt, age 77, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1980, died peacefully on November 4, 2014 at the Pikes Peak Hospice Inpatient Unit in Colorado Springs. He was a retired ELCA Lutheran Pastor who had served at Bethany Lutheran Church, now Grace Lutheran Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. John Michael Schmidt was born on June 14, 1937 in Bloomer, Wisconsin to the late Roy and Gladys (Davis) Schmidt. He was a 1955 graduate of Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He was also a graduate of the University of Minnesota and Iliff Theological Seminary in Denver. He received his MBA from the University of Denver. He had been the Vice-President of Finance for Gerry and Alpine Designs and became a Lutheran Pastor later in his life. He served congregations in Gypsum, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jack married Diane Hawkins on October 20, 1961 in Denver and they had three children: Michael, Philip and Peter. He later married Jan Wilshire on April 17, 1993 in Colorado Springs. Jack loved good conversation, a funny joke, travel, cruises, golf and the outdoors. He will be best remembered for his love of the Lord and his wonderful sense of humor. He served as interim pastor at a number of congregations in the community including Tabor Lutheran Church in Pueblo and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Rockrimmon. He was a volunteer in the Patient Transport Program at Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs and was instrumental in the initial organization of Westside Cares. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Jan; his children: Michael Schmidt, Philip Schmidt and Peter (and Karen) Schmidt; Jan's children: Carol (and Michael) Call, Robert (and Nancy) Wilshire and Lori (and Dale) Duffy. He is also survived by ten wonderful grandchildren: Chase, Christopher, Ashlyn, Morgan, Alexander, Kristyn, Jordan, Katie, Eryn and Rebecca and a great-granddaughter, Dawn.Also surviving are his brothers: Leroy and Leland, and his sisters: Luella and Lolita. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law, Steve Bennett and his sister-in–law, Harriet Schmidt. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Broadmoor Community Church, 315 Lake Avenue in Colorado Springs. Private interment will take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80906. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Pikes Peak Hospice Inpatient Unit for their skilled and compassionate care.
