I was so very fortunate to have Mr. Holliday as a teacher at Howbert Elementary for my 5th grade year in 1978. He was patient, innovative, encouraging and sought out ways to reach and challenge each student individually. He taught me how to write a check, the importance of saving and spending money wisely, respect nature and others and provided an environment that was fun to learn in by creating "Howbertville" within the classroom and our school store. My mother was so grateful for this experience that she had contacted the Gazette to do a story on our classroom and the great work and "unconventional" way of teaching Mr. Holliday implemented. God bless his family and friends and may peace and comfort be with you.

You are in my thoughts Jenny, Marilyn and Joanna - and I will think of Dick out patrolling some tucked away ski slope forever covered with fresh powder.

Dick had such a quiet easy going personality that welcomed and encouraged questions. He was an ambassador for both hummingbirds and snakes. He almost had a friendly competition to see who could sight the first hummer of the season. We knew it would be Dick, but he gave us hope each year we would beat him. He was eager to invite people over to his feeders to enjoy the hummer display as they fought over his well tended feeders. He also spotted many a rare sighting (magnificent) and made sure word got out. His snake programs were known all over town and people came to the hummer festival expecting to see the reptiles. He is the reason I have my cornsnake Rosey. He coached me on the type of snake to search for, and even helped me get started the day after I got her from the humane society. He quietly laughed when I covered my eyes as she ate. 13 years later she is still a very popular working snake visiting classrooms.

Dick was my favorite uncle (I'm the oldest son of his brother Charles)... he was best known as 'The Snake Man' - a local expert on rattlesnakes and naturalist - who put on numerous seminars at 'Bear Creek Nature Center', 'Garden of the Gods', 'Mueller State Park, and local schools. He was a 6th grade teacher, ski patrolman, hunter (member of Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Wild Turkey Federation), and absolutely loved the Colorado outdoors. He was, in essence, a great human being... and he had such a great laugh! My family will never forget his many snakes, and multiple humming bird feeders around his house - or his barbecues out on the deck! I have always looked up to him, admired and respected him, but most of all, loved him as my uncle... and now I will miss him. http://wasithere.typepad.com/b...
