Obituary of Matthew Jared Sumrell

Matthew (Matt) Jared Sumrell died in a single-car traffic accident on January 23, 2015. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 24 as he was returning to his residence in Cascade following errands in Colorado Springs. Matt is survived by his father (Lon Sumrell), two brothers (David and Kevin), his maternal grandmother (Florence Anderson) and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He also leaves behind many friends.Matt was born in Colorado Springs at Penrose Hospital on August 29, 1972. He lived most of his life in Colorado Springs and nearby communities. He graduated from Rampart High School in May of 1991. His primary occupation was house painter and handyman performing general house repair projects. In recent years, he was primarily self-employed – much of that part-time as he provided ongoing daily care and assistance to his mother who was in poor health.Those who knew Matt well would agree that he was a free-spirit – someone who lived "on the edge" and resisted conforming to the general norms and expectations of society. That said, he was nonetheless a good person – kind, generous, and loyal, especially so to friends. Some of those friends organized and attended a memorial at the accident scene on January 27th; subsequently, a Wake service was held at one of the taverns in Colorado Springs where he and his friends sometimes gathered. These thoughtful and loving gestures are greatly appreciated by Matt's family.The family has decided to spread Matt's ashes with those of his mother. However, that event will occur later – probably in June – once the mountain snow has melted enabling access to the site.
