Obituary of Joyce F. Bridges
We will greatly miss Joyce Bridges who passed away at 88 years of age on February 24, 2015. Joyce enjoyed her life with her family, always making sure there were wonderful family dinners together and stimulating, creative activities to participate in.Born March 21, 1926 in Asheville, North Carolina, she graduated from Scarritt College in 1948 with a degree in Religious Studies and Music. She was a Religious Education Director in Ponca City, Oklahoma before marrying the love of her life, Albert Bridges. They were a true southern couple, gentle with others and generous with their time. They enjoyed 62 loving years together, moving to New Mexico after Albert finished his PhD in Physics from Vanderbilt University. In 1957, Albert took a job with Kaman Sciences and he and Joyce moved to Colorado Springs to start a wonderful life of achievement, creativity, and spirituality. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert.Joyce was a beautiful "stay at home" wife and mother, an accomplished quilter, and a Southern cook with a style of her own. She and her husband entertained large parties frequently, for which she planned the events and cooked the delicious meals. She also pursued her creative talents in sewing and quilting, participating in yearly workshops with renowned quilting experts. She upheld the standards of the original art form of quilting – all work was completed by hand. "In frontier life patchwork quilts grew out of the need for something beautiful. These women were artists, who would often see a beautiful design and reproduce it in their quilts." Joyce continued this tradition. She was very active in church work as a church organist and director of the children's choir for the Black Forest Community Church when her own children were growing up. She cooked for church events and participated with her husband in funding church projects including repairing the historic church organ of the First Congregational Church of Colorado Springs. In their later years, she and Al enjoyed the spiritual life they found with the First United Methodist Church of Colorado Springs. Joyce especially enjoyed the music department's special programs.Joyce leaves behind her daughters, Melinda Allbright (Jim) and Margot Childers (Dave); and her son, John Bridges (Karen); as well as six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00PM, Saturday, March 7 2015 at First United Methodist Church, 420 North Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you extend a kindness to someone with the thought of Joyce in mind or a contribution may be sent to the music department of the First United Methodist Church of Colorado Springs.Funeral Home:The Springs Funeral Services3115 East Platte AvenueColorado Springs, , COUS 80909
