Obituary of Mark Edward Hays

Mark Edward Hays passed away February 24, 2016 in Colorado Springs. Mark is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kathy Hays; brothers Jack (Janice) and Keith (Judy) and nephew Andrew (Chanthy) Hays. Mark was born February 2, 1949 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of John and Beverly (Rydeen) Hays. Mark graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 1967 where he was on the National Honor Society and Student Council and played five sports including three years of hockey and captain of the team in his senior year. Mark graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1971 where he received a Professional Degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, of Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary society, and of the Press Club for the Oredigger school newspaper. After graduation, Mark started his career in the oil and gas industry at Plateau Natural Gas in Colorado Springs. Mark and Kathy married in 1978. Through numerous company consolidations, Mark lived and worked in Omaha, Wichita and Denver, eventually moving to Houston to work at Enron Headquarters where he was Director for Enron Capital & Trade Resources Corp. Mark retired in 1999 and returned to Colorado Springs. Since then Mark and Kathy have enjoyed their regular outings in various mountain towns of Colorado and their get-togethers with their close friends "The Buffaloes". Mark was a member of The Hendersons and the Lunch Bunch (regular weekly lunches with his two brothers and five other best friends) and had been a member of the Broadmoor Golf Club and the El Paso Club. Mark was a long-time volunteer at the American Numismatic Association here in Colorado Springs. In his personal life, Mark will be remembered as a steady friend, a person with a dry sense of humor and sharp wit, and a guy who was "structured, punctual and set-in-his ways". Mark was fondly known as "Fast Eddie" to his friends and family, a nickname that originated from his senior year as captain of the Indians hockey team when Mark played both offense and defense; and legend has it that between periods he also drove the Zamboni.
