Obituary of Margaret Koch
The year was 1919, the year of the big flu epidemic. Andreas and Margaretha Unrah were awaiting the birth of their eighth child. January 15th little Margaret Unrah was born. But Mother was not doing well and realized her time was short. She asked her sister to take the baby and raise her. Mother died five days later.Gertrude Goosen, the mother of twelve children agreed. Her youngest, Bernard was three at the time and the two proved to be close companions. She remembers sitting at the end of the dining table beside her Goosen Dad which was unusual. Margaret was the "pet" to her entire family and was treated as such.Early in her life she received Jesus Christ as her Savior during her time at Silver Lake Mennonite Brethren Church at Marion, South Dakota. She remained active in churches wherever her travels took her.During her youth she learned the skills and life ethic of hard work and frugality. Energetic, laughing easily and flouncing her long red hair, she made many friends. At about twenty she set out on her own adventures. She went to New York to see John Unrah her brother. Later she moved elsewhere and always seemed to find work. She often went to Montana to help her brothers with harvest.Sometimes she forgot to write to the family. After a silent period, the family became worried and then found out she was in Chicago. One fateful evening, on her way to be an usherette at a Revival she was hit by a bus and thrown about 40 feet. She remained conscious even though an eye had popped out of socket along with broken leg and arm and other injuries. When word reached the family, two brothers John and Bernard went to see her. It is hard to say which of them was the most surprised to see the sight of each other. Not one to be bored, she would practice pulling herself up on the lift bar above her bed until she was able to sit on it like a trapeze. This was her surprise for the doctors one morning. She remained in the hospital for three months and three weeks. Apparently all expenses were covered by the bus company. She recovered without any handicaps except trouble with nerves in one eye.In September of 1955, she married Warren (Bud) Koch. Shortly after, they moved to Colorado Springs where Warren worked at the Air Force Academy, construction for a short time and then created his own business as a locksmith/key master. They had one son, Bill. She worked as a bookkeeper at Amex from where she retired in 1983. She then nursed Warren through illness until his passing in January 1991.Margaret attended Circle Drive Baptist Church as long as she was physically able. She enjoyed life and commented frequently of friends she had made in Colorado Springs, especially the ones she went out to lunch with. As her health declined, Bill invited Debra Barnes, Margaret's daughter in-law to live in the basement apartment to help if Margaret would need caretaking. It ended up that Debra not only took care of Margaret but Bill as well. He passed away in January of 2013, preceding his mother in death. Her desire to go Home was strong. She was a believer and trusted the Lord to take care of all details. With wanting to pass in her own house, her desire was granted on June 15, 2016. She passed in her sleep, quietly and peacefully. She was the last remaining of the Unrah children and their spouses and the last remaining of the Goosen siblings and spouses. One sister-in-law, Mary Jane Goosen remains and resides in Parker, South Dakota at the young age of 100.We await the day that all her families will be reunited once again in the Home of Our Heavenly Father.Memorial Service, 2:00PM, Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Circle Drive Baptist Church, 801 North Circle Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909.Funeral Home:The Springs Funeral Services3115 East Platte AvenueColorado Springs, , COUS 80909
