Obituary of Richard Harold Hayes

Loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many died on June 16, 2016. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Hayes and mother, Winifred (Rempp) Hayes Price. Survived by his wife of 48 years, Cherie (Hartwig) Hayes; daughter, Kristin (Hayes) Newell; grandson, Keegan Newell; and sisters Linda (Hayes) Underhill, Sherri (Hayes) McGee and Sandy (Hayes) Price. Rich was born and raised in Marshalltown, Iowa. In 1964, he received a basketball scholarship to Upper Iowa College, where he received his BS in Elementary Education in 1968. He went on to receive both an MS in Elementary Education and Administrative Endorsement from Northern Illinois University. Rich began his career in 1968, teaching elementary school for three years and as an Elementary Principal for nine years in Elgin, Illinois. He next served as a Middle School Principal for nine years in Basalt, Colorado; and then Assistant Superintendent for three years in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. In 1994 he moved to Colorado Springs where he served as an Elementary Principal for six years, Middle School Principal for four years, and Sr. High Math Teacher for one year, retiring in 2003. While in Elgin, Rich was honored as "Boss of they Year" and in Colorado Springs, Phi Delta Kappa honored him as "Educator of the Year". Rich volunteered his time over the years as a Cub Scout leader, T-ball and Little League coach, and YMCA Basketball.
