Ernest & Mary Banda posted a condolence

I was very sad to learn of Al's passing. Al and I were on the USS Iowa together (1952-1956). Al was my chief. Years later after retirement, Al would call us on the phone and he would say "Buenos Dias Amigos"! We really loved hearing from him. Al & Ginny would come to San Antonio to visit us and we would take them to Garcia's Mexican Restaurant to eat. Al was so good at keeping in touch with friends and keeping us all informed as to who was in need of prayers. He was a good man. We attended most of the USS Iowa reunions together. We also went to Fredericksburg,TX. Al and I would go to a tavern while Ginny and Mary shopped. We have very fond memories of our times together. "Adios Amigo"! May you Rest in Peace. Love Ernest and Mary Banda

Al has been a part of our family for over 20 years. My mother - Virginia - and him had an extremely close relationship, and spent most of their time together. They actually were probably closer than most married couples... They spent almost all of their time together since they met, and she was by his side EVERY DAY, ALL DAY since the day he started not feeling right a few months ago.. I take comfort in the fact that my mom and my oldest son were with Al when he took his last breath.... He left this world knowing just how much he was loved. We've all considered him family, and my kids can't even remember a time that he was not around. To us, he is "Grandpa Al" and he will be missed so very much. â

Hello, My name is Donald Moog I live in San Diego, California. I met Al in the early 1960's. While on the USS Cogswell DD 651 Him, Art Blaine, Chuck Jones and I were the best of friends. We lost touch with Chuck after we put the ship out of commission but Al, Art and myself attended all of the ships reunions together until latey. Al was a great friend and will be missed.
