Obituary of SSgt Daniel Young, U.S. Army

Daniel Young, age 73, died peacefully at home after a long illness with his wife of thirty-four years at his side.Daniel was born to Lawrence and Alene Young on September 4, 1943 in Valparaiso, Indiana. He grew up in Wanatah, Indiana, where he graduated high school and then entered the United States Army in 1964. While in the military, Daniel reached the rank of Senior Staff Sergeant, and served as a Communication Shift Supervisor with Special Security Detachment, Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Department of the Army, with duty in Vietnam from 1965-1966. As stated in his official commendation, "SSgt Young has contributed significantly to the counter-insurgency program in South Vietnam. His diligent efforts, true spirit of cooperation, and professional manner greatly exceed that which may be expected of a man of his grade and experience. SSgt Young is deserving of the highest praise and his performance reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army." Through his service he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation for "meritorious service."In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James; his brother, Edgar; his sister, Shirley; and his son, David.Daniel is survived by his wife, Debbie; his son, Michael Bidnick from North Carolina; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Breidenstine from Colorado Springs; his grandchildren, Ryan Parquette, Josh Young, Mason Bidnick, and Makenna Bidnick; and his siblings, Roger (Mary Ann) Young, Bobby (Patti) Young, and Sue (Damon) Moore from Indiana.He will always be remembered for his dry wit, giving Debbie her "orders", looking out for loved ones more than himself, Chapstick, rowdy family card games, and above all else, his love of family. He is described by his loved ones as: hero, protector, strong, generous, caring, accepting, mentor, inspiration, friend, and one in a million.Memorial Service, 4:00PM, Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at The Springs Funeral Services, 3115 East Platte Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dan's memory through The Springs Funeral Services.
