Obituary of Johnnie Mae Bernhard Oliver
Johnnie Mae Bernhard Oliver passed away August 6, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, after a lengthy illness due to cancer. Johnnie was born in San Antonio, Texas, at Nix Hospital. During childhood she lived with her parents, Milton D. "Barney" and Johnnie Mae (Bartlett) Bernhard in the Northside Community, and attended Locke Hill Elementary, Northside Junior High, and John Marshall High School. She graduated from John Marshall High School in 1963, attended San Antonio Junior College that summer, and then started at The University of Texas, Austin, in the fall of that year. While at UT, she met the love of her life, her Texas Aggie husband-to-be, Mike Oliver, of Belton, Texas. They were married in the Spring of 1966 following his graduation from Texas A&M. After he joined the U.S. Air Force in late 1966, she accompanied him to various assignments in Texas, California, Germany, Colorado, Virginia, and New Orleans. Their daughter, Robyn Filzen, was born in 1968 during the California assignment. Following Mike’s retirement in 1991, they moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where Mike worked at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant while Johnnie continued to pursue her twenty-year career with H&R Block as a Senior Tax Professional. After Mike’s “second retirement” at WIPP, Johnnie also retired from Block. After several more years in Carlsbad, they sold their home and began moving to Monument, Colorado to be near their daughter, Robyn, and her family.Johnnie is preceded in death by her father, Milton D. "Barney" Bernhard and her mother, Johnnie Mae Bernhard, both of San Antonio and Temple, Texas; and her sister, Donna Rae Gibson of Harker Heights, Texas. She is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Mike Oliver; daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Tim Filzen; and granddaughters, Kathryn and Sarah Filzen, all of Monument, Colorado.Originally a member of the United Methodist Church, Johnnie later was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church in America.Visitation, 4:00PM-7:00PM, Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at The Springs Funeral Services-North, 6575 Oakwood Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80923.Visitation, 5:00PM-8:00PM Friday, August 11, 2017 at Dossman Funeral Home, 2525 North Main Street, Belton, Texas 76513.Graveside Service, 10:00AM, Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Mary Allen Oliver Community Cemetery, 6200 West FM 436, Belton, Texas 76513.Funeral Home:The Springs Funeral Services3115 East Platte AvenueColorado Springs, , COUS 80909
